Unusual in that you usually have to wait until March before ice floes start detaching themselves with their attendant fisherman. However, the good people of Sakhalin have started early this year.

Konstantin of Russia Blog fame keeps up his attack on asinine western reporting of Russian gas politics via Snarling Winnie-the-Pooh, meanwhile Edward Lucas (who as the resident Economist correspondent was the best counter-cylical indicator possible) steps in with invective rather than analysis (link via A Step At A Time) which is cut and pasted at the bottom for your edification. Before I lose you in Edward's alphabetic rant, some other pointers: Andrew Jack, previously Moscow-based FT reporter and author of Inside Putin's Russia, acknowledges that there may be two sides to the story (and then fails to mention Ukraine's theft of European gas).
There are some indisputable facts that should be laid out before an analysis is made. The failure to do so by most journalists and bloggers is usually because the facts inconveniently do not fit with their analysis:

I spent many of my formative years at a Public School that was not public at all. The holidays were spent with my parents in some god-foarsaken outpost of a shrinking (shrunken) empire. This gave me the opportunity to meet many "spies" from many countries. My favorite was an East German in Cyprus who loved the good life and dreaded the end of his posting.
My everlasting impression of the MI6 spooks I met, without exception the guys in the Embassy, was one of tired, slightly sweaty incompetence. Unless you are a fan of Graham Greene books or other seedy views of Brits in hot foreign countries managing the natives whilst trying to pretend that they are still in Surrey its not an easy picture to conjure up.
My immediate take on the current spy saga in Moscow is one of an over-eager, under-competent MI6 undertaking its legitimate spying job in Russia and getting caught - which happens from time-to-time. Whether NGO funding was part of MI6's remit or the job that one of the "diplomats" was doing as his cover is unclear. I can just imagine the row that is now going on between the Foreign Office/Ambassador and MI6 as a bunch of worthy NGO's (The Committee Against Torture springs to mind) are under the cosh as foreign agents.
The non-row between Britain and Russia will be forgotten quickly. The NGO's will never recover.

I'm not a great fan of personalizing what are otherwise work/Russia related thoughts. However, it has been a little chilly around here for the last week. At the weekend the temperature rose to a barmy -22. The picture below is yours truly after 2 hours cross-country skiing around the dacha on Saturday. The whitish thing hanging off the right side of my hat is an icicle.
The picture was taken with a Treo650 as the light faded at 4P.M. so please excuse the quality.

With a huge vote of thanks to MosNews I am able to report the first occurrence of "why its dangerous to be a man in Russia" the winter version. Up to 400 Fishermen Stranded on Ice Floe in Russia’s Far East.

The FT reports on the alarm that the Palestinian people's voice has caused. A gentleman by the name of Robert Fisk has been telling anyone who is willing to listen (sic) that Israel's illegal occupation of the West Bank and Jerusalem and the sellout by Fatah in search of a US-led peace has led to greater support of Hamas. In short that this election result should not be a surprise.
Beware what democracy might bring.

As the Moscow Times continues its ante-deluvian web archive access policy this piece of juice is brought to you by Cellular News.
It looks as though the documents are finally beginning to turn up which blow apart Reiman's defense that Galmond is the owner of IPOC and thus a large chunk of Megafon.
It's not as though it is a surprise; Galmond is a truly crap lawyer who rose to prominence as the man who told Reiman et al that he could hide their rape and pillage of the St. Petersburg telecom industry. I can't see Glamond's assertion that his repeated representations to various parties that Reiman was the economic beneficiary of TCI, Telecominvest etc were erroneous going down well with a civil bench judge in the UK.
In a tit-for-tat assault Friedman had a dacha taken away which he privatized in the 90's (also in the MT so no link for you.)
I would imagine that the stakes will rise a little now. So how long will Reiman be supported by VVP - or what kompromat does Reiman have??
Alfa goes another set up in this 5 setter.

I've been missing my monthly dose of Reiman vs AlfaInvestor defends Russian minister in MegaFon share dispute.
Fortunately Google is there to ensure that Mr. Galmond's entertaining comments are readily available.

The FT reports that Russia curbs gas supplies to Europe due to the slightly cold weather here. Good thing too I say because as the baby Polar Bear said - I'm freezin'.
I have not been outside the center today but it was -28 and my car was not happy - apparently it was -32 at Sheremeytevo. Even worse it would appear that someone has stolen all the moisture in the air.
